Indianola Academy Junior Stefon Smith ranked No. 5 in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Gridiron Pre-Season Top 20. Smith is six feet, one inch weighing in at 230 pounds for the AAA Colonels.
Football fans wanting a sample taste of the upcoming 2017 high school football season can get that appetite somewhat whetted this Friday night.
Gentry High fans will not have to leave town as the Rams are hosting a jamboree scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with JF Kennedy High of Mound Bayou and Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood squaring off against each other.
This will be followed by a Leflore County – West Tallahatchie match-up at 6:30 p.m. while the Rams will initially take the field at 7:30 p.m. p.m. to scrimmage against Coahoma Aggie of Clarksdale.
The Rams’ night of play will ultimately end when they take the field at 9 p.m. against Shaw High School, a scrimmage which follows an 8:15 p.m. Shaw versus Aggie battle.
All scrimmages will feature a pair of 15 minute running clock halves except for the final two minutes, which will operate with a normal clock.
That same night, the Indianola Academy Colonels will make the trip to Lee Academy in Clarksdale where they will take the field at 5:40 p.m. against Magnolia Heights School of Senatobia.
This IA sneak preview will then continue at 7:40 p.m. when the Colonels take on district foe North Delta School of Batesville.
Additional action occurring in the north end of the county will find North Sunflower Academy traveling to Marvell, Arkansas where their jamboree competition will be Calhoun Academy and Delta Academy of Marks. First snap for each of these scrimmages is scheduled to occur at 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively.
As of this writing Ruleville Central High is not participating in a pre-season jamboree.
Opening night of the regular season for IA, NSA, and Ruleville Central is next Friday, August 18 while the Gentry High campaign will begin one day later.
