One final regular season basketball game to be played and then it’s on to postseason play for the Gentry High Lady Rams.
Taking a 17-10 record into next week’s Region 3-4A Tournament to be hosted at Yazoo City High School, Head Coach Sarita Cooper’s squad enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed although the exact date, time, and opponent are to be announced.
This No. 1 seeding ensures the Lady Rams of a berth in the upcoming State 4A playoffs which begins with a February 19 play-in game. As for the location of that game, the higher seed of each bracket will be designated as the host team.
Serving as the Lady Rams’ competition in the opening round of the state playoffs will be one of the top four teams coming out of the Region 2-4A Tournament.
Making up that particular region are teams from Amory, Caledonia, Itawamba AHS of Fulton, Mooreville, Pontotoc, and Shannon High Schools.
As for their final regular season game, the Lady Rams will host Shaw High School this Friday at 6 p.m. in a non-regional clash.
In their basketball action this past week, the Gentry High squad claimed a 68-33 regional victory over visiting Greenwood High School.
Shrugging off a 12-7 first period deficit, the Lady Rams took over the game in the second quarter and eventually went to the dressing room at halftime as owners of a 21-19 lead.
The second half of play continued to be controlled by the Gentry squad as a 19-8 third period surge was followed by an even larger 28-6 final period scoring lead.
In addition to executing single digit defense in the final three periods of the game, fueling this 35 point win was the double figure scoring by four Lady Rams.
While Nihya Davis led all scorers with a dozen points, Mercedes Hayes turned in a double double performance which included 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Khanijah White also bucketed 11 points in the game while Belize Reed added 10 points to the Lady Rams’ point total.
Additional Lady Rams’ basketball was played last Saturday when they claimed a dominating 53-16 road victory over Yazoo City High School.
While limiting the Lady Indians to single digit scoring in each period, including a total of four total second half points, the Lady Rams exploded to a 35-12 halftime lead to quickly put the game to rest.
A pair of sophomores led the scoring for Gentry High in this game led by Jaidra Green’s double double which included a dozen points and 10 rebounds.
Also adding 12 points to the Lady Rams’ offensive efforts was Shacori Dawson.
