A pair of home dates will book-end a road trip for the Gentry High School basketball teams during this upcoming week’s action.
The first of the home-court nights of play will occur today when O’Bannon High of Greenville visits the Gentry High gym.
The Rams, now 5-3 in the season, will follow the Lady Rams’ 6 p.m. tipoff with hopes of picking up their second consecutive victory.
This past Tuesday night the Rams defeated the Panthers of Amanda Elzy High by a 56-43 margin to notch their latest addition to the win column.
Meanwhile, the 1-6 Lady Rams opened Tuesday night’s play by claiming their first win of the season: a 35-29 decision over the Elzy High squad from Greenwood.
Additional action by the Gentry High squads will happen this Saturday with a long trip to Lake Cormorant High School in DeSoto County.
This upcoming week’s play will continue next Tuesday when Leflore County High of Itta Bena visits the Gentry High gym.
Tipoff for both days’ action will begin with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game following immediately thereafter.
In the Lady Rams’ Tuesday night victory over Elzy High, the Gentry High squad built upon their 15-13 halftime lead in the second half of the contest.
Alasya Minniefield led the scoring for the Lady Rams in this game with her 10-point night of play.
Just missing double digit scoring against the Lady Panthers was Rhinya Ginn, who posted eight points on the scoreboard.
In the boys’ game, the Rams parlayed an 8-point (19-11) halftime lead into their final 13-point victory by game’s end.
Draven Walker was the high-point producer for the Rams as he bucketed 17 points against the Panthers’ defense.
Also reaching double figure scoring status was Kevion Smith, who added 10 points to the Rams final score.
As for other competition played this past week, the Rams fell by a narrow 52-50 margin to Horn Lake High School.
Participating in last Friday’s Kirk Price Shootout hosted by Gentry High, the Rams saw a 22-16 halftime lead over the Eagles disappear in the second half of the game.
It was Smith leading the scoring for the Rams as he pumped 17 points through the basket against the Eagles.
However, Kylon Appleberry was a force in the game as well, as his double-double performance included a dozen points and 10 rebounds.
In pre-Thanksgiving Day play, a trip to Greenwood to participate in the Delta Challenge Tournament netted the Rams a victory.
Playing at the Andrew McQueen Jr. Civic Center in Greenwood, the Rams earned a 68-28 win over the Blue Devils of Hollandale Simmons High School.
Four Ram players reached double digit scoring in this game, an effort led by Smith’s14-point outing.
While Kriston Jones posted 12 points on the scoreboard, Otis Cole and Rlynton Raymond contributed 10 points apiece to the Rams’ offensive attack.
In girls’ action last Friday, the Lady Rams fell by a 39-28 score to Horn Lake High School.
It would be Ginn emerging as high scorer for the Gentry High squad as she completed her night’s play with 11 points scored.
