A brand-new football opponent is coming to Gentry High School today.
Along with that new opponent’s arrival is the hope that the Rams will also record their first victory of the season.
Making their first-ever visit to Gentry High School for today’s 7 p.m. kickoff will be the Indians of Hazlehurst High School.
Following their nearly two-hour drive to Indianola, the Region 7-3A member Indians will put their 1-1 record on the line against an 0-3 Gentry Rams squad hungry for a victory.
Last Friday night, while the Rams dropped a 36-0 decision to Humphreys County High (1-2) of Belzoni, the Indians claimed a 15-6 victory over Natchez High School.
That recent Hazlehurst High win followed a season-opening 30-12 defeat at the hands of East Marion High near Columbia.
Last season, the Indians of Hazlehurst High recorded a 3-7 record, the second consecutive losing season their football program endured.
Meanwhile, in last week’s shutout loss to Humphreys County High, the 4A member Rams were unable to get untracked against the 3A member Cowboys – the result being the team from Belzoni earning their initial victory of the season.
The game’s outcome also secured the Cowboys their second consecutive series victory over the Rams.
