The Delta Overload Robotics Team from Gentry High School in Indianola was awarded the Inclusion Award at the sixth annual Optimum Innovator Awards on Tuesday.
The team received a $2,000 grant for their efforts in innovation, community engagement, and promoting diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The award ceremony took place at Moorhead Central School, where representatives from Optimum presented the check.
Delta Overload #6068 is the first and only robotics team in Sunflower County and surrounding areas, according to organizers.
“They are trailblazers in their community,” said Mrs. Yulanda Jimison Campbell, the team’s coordinator. “This recognition highlights their dedication to STEM and inclusion.”
Optimum, a broadband and telecommunications provider, sponsors the awards to support FIRST Robotics teams across 21 states. This year, the company awarded more than $25,000 in grants to five winners, five runners-up, and 18 honorable mentions.
Shawn Ducre-Jackson, market business director for Optimum’s Mid-Central Region, congratulated the team in a speech, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and paying it forward.
“Delta Overload Robotics exemplifies innovation and community spirit,” Ducre-Jackson said. “They’re setting the example for future teams to follow.”
The award recognizes teams demonstrating excellence in innovation, diversity, and community service.
