The community of Inverness and surrounding areas is celebrating a significant milestone for one of their own.
Allee Greenberry Paxton, a bright and dedicated young woman from the Delta, recently graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center with her medical degree and is now preparing to begin her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at UMMC.
The most recent graduation ceremony for medical doctors from UMMC was held on May 23 during the 69th annual UMMC Commencement.
Nearly 1,000 graduates, including MDs, were conferred degrees in medical sciences. The ceremony took place at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
From her early days at Indianola Academy to her impressive academic journey, Allee’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and a deep commitment to serving her community.
A Passion Rooted in Personal Experience
Allee’s interest in medicine was sparked in childhood, inspired by her father, who often brought her along to his hospital calls and clinic visits.
She vividly recalls her grandfather’s battle with lymphoma at the South Mississippi Cancer Center, where the compassionate care of Dr. Patterson left a lasting impression.
“Seeing the impact that doctors have on people’s lives really solidified my desire to become a physician,” she shared.
Educational Achievements and Honors
An outstanding student, Allee graduated as valedictorian from Indianola Academy in 2017 and continued her academic excellence at Mississippi College, earning numerous honors, including the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship.
Her journey in medicine was marked by remarkable achievements, such as her research published in American Journal of Gastroenterology and recognition at national conferences.
Throughout her studies, Allee emphasized the importance of self-trust and confidence—learning to rely on her education and intuition as she advanced through rigorous training.
Looking Toward the Future
Allee is excited to begin her residency at UMMC, where she will focus on internal medicine and pediatrics—fields she loves for their breadth and diversity.
Her goal is to eventually specialize further through a hospitalist fellowship or to serve in the Delta, continuing her involvement in the community that shaped her.
“I want my patients to feel like I am on their side, and they can be comfortable with me,” she says. Her dedication to building trust and providing compassionate care underscores her approach as she embarks on her professional journey.
Reflections on Health care and Community
Allee’s experiences have given her a nuanced view of the health care system.
She highlights that many health issues stem not solely from individual choices but from systemic barriers, such as access to affordable care and resources. Her memorable encounter with a patient who wished for her to continue her care exemplifies her deep compassion and connection to her community.
She also recognizes the challenges posed by insurance and administrative hurdles but remains hopeful about the future—especially with advances in technology and medicine. “The art of medicine goes beyond what AI or machines can do,” she notes, emphasizing the importance of human touch and nuanced understanding.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Allee credits her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey. She also extends gratitude to her mentors and colleagues at Indianola Family Medical Group and to Dr. Hannah Ray, whose mentorship and friendship have been especially meaningful.
As a proud Delta native, Allee is committed to giving back and hopes to serve her community in meaningful ways in the years to come.
A Bright Future Ahead
In closing, Allee offers words of encouragement to aspiring medical professionals: “Keep going. It’s a long road, but the days are long and the years are short. Before you know it, you’ll be on the other side looking back.”
The community of Inverness and beyond eagerly awaits to see all that she will accomplish, confident in the bright future of this exceptional young woman.
