It's hard to believe that it has been five years since I walked into The Enterprise-Tocsin, wanting an opportunity to contribute to the paper. As I bid farewell to the Delta and prepare to embark on a new adventure at Fox26 in Houston, Texas, I can't help but reflect on the profound impact community and relationships have had on my journey as a journalist.
I'll never forget the first day I stepped into The Enterprise-Tocsin. Ms. Debbie, the ever-dedicated force behind the scenes, greeted me with genuine warmth and hospitality. Little did I know that Ms. Debbie's unwavering work ethic and above-and-beyond attitude would become the glue that held the paper together, and she would become a cherished friend throughout my time there.
I asked to speak with the publisher, Bryan. As I walked into his office, I was met with a genuine smile and an openness to hear my aspirations. In that moment, I knew that The Enterprise-Tocsin was the perfect place for me to build the foundations of my journalistic career. Bryan's genuine enthusiasm and unwavering support became the pillars that fueled my growth.
Under Bryan's mentorship, I ventured into uncharted territory, learning the art from capturing compelling sports photos to making sense of the often complex and overwhelming board meetings. I wore many hats during my time at the paper - from being a versatile multimedia coordinator and dedicated reporter to embracing the role of a freelance journalist. And you know what? I loved every minute of it. From being referred to as ‘newslady’ to spending Mondays with city and county lawmakers.
The lessons I learned at The Enterprise-Tocsin were abundant, but the most profound was the realization of the value community and relationships hold. We, as journalists, are not just bystanders, but active participants in the lives of the communities we serve. The give-and-take between the community and ourselves is a delicate dance, allowing us to paint a complete picture of the county we serve.
And now, as I prepare to embrace a new chapter at Fox26, I carry with me the experiences and heartfelt connections forged during my time at The Enterprise-Tocsin. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the community that raised and embraced me, for Ms. Debbie's unwavering support, and for Bryan's belief in my abilities. I can’t forget the needed laughter that Mary Howard brought and wisdom that Recardo provided along the way. They have all played an instrumental role in shaping the journalist I have become.
As I step onto a bigger stage, my heart remains firmly rooted in the lessons I learned at The Enterprise-Tocsin. I am excited to broaden my reach and connect with a larger audience at Fox26. It's not just about reporting the news; it's about sharing the stories that matter, touching lives, and fostering understanding.
Leaving the Delta is bittersweet, but I know that the spirit of community and the deep-rooted relationships I have formed will always be with me.
