This past Tuesday evening, after listening to productive and unproductive discourse at the City Hall Annex, I ran into some producers from CNN.
They were stationed outside City Hall, although they were largely uninterested in the city’s current plight to rid the town of drag racers.
Had the city attempted to ban drag queen racers on Tuesday night, the divisive 24-hour cable news network might have raced to the special call meeting, with cameras rolling.
They were nice guys, and we chatted about Indianola and the Delta for about 30 minutes.
I encouraged them to stick around. Life is interesting here, and there are far more stories Indianola and Sunflower County have to tell other than the current tragic events.
It’s easy to get down on Indianola right now. But there are some great things happening here, probably stuff you won’t see on cable news.
The New York Times, on the other hand, had a nice feature this week on the grand reopening of Club Ebony.
That’s right. That’s this weekend.
The Club had a soft opening after a massive renovation project back in March, but this weekend is going to be a party.
Susan Tedeschi, who played along with Derek Trucks at the B.B. King Museum expansion party a couple of years ago, will be the headliner on Saturday.
Coupled with that is the Blue Biscuit Festival, which got the party started on Thursday after the ribbon cutting at the Club.
The Blue Biscuit will have live acts, drinks and food all weekend.
It’s the kind of weekend one would hope would happen at least once a quarter, maybe growing into a more frequent bash as it grows in popularity.
There’s also a Farmer’s Market today at the Indianola Community Wellness Center from 3 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out the center, be sure to drop by there today.
It’s something very special. While there checking out the produce, ask about a membership.
On Friday evening, First Presbyterian Church in Indianola will be hosting its First Friday Film Fellowship.
The 7 p.m. event features a movie, followed by discussion about the spiritual aspects of the film.
Not every weekend is this action-packed, but there’s plenty of positive news and activities coming out of our small town and county.
And you don’t have to wait until Sunday to pray for those who are suffering, and also for our community’s leaders who are grappling with issues on multiple fronts.
We need good leaders who do not act with expediency at the expense of wisdom.
To all, have a great weekend!
