A utility task vehicle crash Valentine’s Day claimed the life of a sixth-grade student at Grenada Middle School.
Jonah Steven Hanks, 12, was killed when the side-by-side he was riding on crashed on Rolling Oaks Road. Deputies with the Grenada County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene at 3:50 p.m. When they arrived, several citizens in the neighborhood were on the scene rendering aid to the crash victims, according to GCSO reports.
MedStat Emergency Medical Services paramedics arrived on scene and began to render aid to the victims. Hanks was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
“This is a very tragic and unfortunate event that will affect our communities and county for quite some time,” Sheriff Garrett Hartley said. “Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the deceased. We ask that the families of all involved be in your prayers.”
Funeral services for Hanks will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
