The City of Indianola has had a few rough landings in the last few months when it comes to conducting the people’s business.
The latest discovery is the city was apparently behind on sales tax payments to the Mississippi Department of Revenue, to the tune of $10,793, dating from March of this year until the end of September.
City Clerk Angela Goodwin informed the board this past Monday night that she paid the bill and that the city would be paying on time moving forward.
Ward 1 Alderman Gary Fratesi reminded Goodwin that all payments had to be approved by the board and are to go through the claims docket.
The board then held a vote to approve the payment, which had already been made. Fratesi voted yes, as well as Ward 2 Alderman Darrell Simpson, but when it got to Ward 3 Alderman Ruben Woods, he did not immediately give a yay or a nay.
“It’s already been paid,” he said. “There’s no point.”
He eventually agreed with the vote, as did Ward 4 Alderman Marvin Elder and Ward 5 Alderman Sam Brock, who asked that language be added to note the bill had been paid ahead of the vote.
