The City of Indianola has $700,000 to spend.
That’s the city’s portion of the $2.2 million grant that was announced by Rep. Bennie Thompson this past winter and was awarded to Sunflower County for municipal projects.
During Monday night’s city board meeting, Indianola Mayor Ken Featherstone provided the board and citizens in attendance some proposals for that money spend that include new vehicles and equipment for public works, public safety upgrades and parks and recreation improvements.
Among the list where some of the following items: several trucks for public works (2023 Ford F350 service truck, 2023 Ford F350 with crane and life gate), commercial district and city hall décor (holiday pole mounts and 24 foot ornament stack for city hall), parks and recreation/entertainment (portable stage, metal basketball court shelter for BB King Park), and Indianola Police Department (mobile surveillance system, non-lethal shotguns).
Featherstone stated that he believes these proposals would help with the improvement of the city.
“Our focuses were on other areas in terms of improving public safety and benefits to tourism and economic development,” Featherstone explained.
