Indianola has hit the gas pedal on road safety by reinstalling speed bumps on Kinlock Road, addressing concerns raised by residents about rampant speeding.
Last summer, the city installed speed bumps as a proactive measure to enhance road safety. However, the scorching heat and heavy traffic took a toll on the material used for the speed bumps, causing them to deteriorate over time.
Mayor Ken Featherstone acknowledged the impact of the damaged speed bumps stating, "Because of that, we had some speeding going up and down that road."
To restore effective traffic control measures, the city’s public works department replaced the deteriorated speed bumps.
Public Works Director Elvis Pernell explained, "We tied them back into the existing inside, so right now they have been replaced all the way down."
They used a hot mixing machine to ensure a sturdy foundation for the new speed bumps. Pernell said the hot mix was carefully laid, compacted and layered to prevent water penetration.
Reflecting on the challenges faced last year, Pernell expressed optimism for a milder summer stating, "Last year, we experienced consecutive hundred-degree days, which contributed to the material degradations but hopefully, it’ll be long again before we have those.”
