A postseason road trip to North Mississippi is now at hand for the Thomas Edwards High Tigers football team.
Opening their 3A State Playoff competition this Friday at 7 p.m., the Tigers will travel to Sardis to take on the North Panola High Cougars.
It will be a challenging test for the 2-6 Tigers as they take on a 7-1 North Panola squad which, for the second consecutive year, claimed the Region 2-3A championship.
Also owners of six consecutive winning seasons, thus far this season the Cougars’ success has come, in part, from a potent offense which is averaging 39 points per game.
Along with a defense which allows only 13.5 points per game, the Sardis squad was able to accumulate their strong record. The Cougars’ only loss this season came at the hands of 5A member Lafayette County High of Oxford.
In their most recent play last Friday, the Cougars manhandled Holly Springs High by a 40-10 score.
That same night, the Tigers dropped a 55-16 decision to District 3-3A foe and champion Winona High School.
There is a football history between Edwards High and North Panola High as the two teams have played twice. The Cougars claimed victory on both occasions with the last meeting occurring in 2019 and resulting in a 58-8 Tigers loss.
Should the Tigers defeat the Cougars on Friday evening, their second-round opponent will be the winner of this week’s Water Valley High versus Aberdeen High playoff game.
