Questions about the jail bill for one Sunflower County prisoner led to confusion last week over whether the individual had his initial court appearance.
In a letter read aloud at the last meeting of the Sunflower County Board of Supervisors, Indianola Police Chief Edrick Hall stated that Albert Singleton had been in jail since April but had not been bound over to the county.
It was said multiple times during the meeting that Singleton had not received his initial appearance, but Municipal court records shown to The Enterprise-Tocsin this week indicate that Singleton did have an initial within the mandated 48 hour period after his arrest.
The records also confirm, however, that Singleton has yet to have a preliminary hearing, which was originally scheduled for May 1.
Reports indicate Singleton’s Public Defender Demetrice Wells did not show up to the hearing on May 1.
Singleton was arrested in late April for burglary of a commercial dwelling.
As of last week, the city was being billed $35 per day for Singleton’s stay in the Sunflower County Jail.
