Ruleville’s board of aldermen chose on Tuesday night to not rehire longtime Police Chief Ernie Scarber.
Mayor Michael Clark told The Enterprise-Tocsin on Wednesday morning that Scarber’s more than a decade-long tenure with the department is over.
“He wasn’t rehired,” Clark said.
Captain Amos Mitchner, whom Clark said has over 25 years of law enforcement experience, is now the acting chief.
Clark offered few other details about the personnel move.
Scarber was not available for comment at the time this article was published.
The move comes about a week after a new board in the small town of about 3,000 took the oath of office for the latest term.
Ruleville is not the only department in the area that has seen turnover at the top of late.
Moorhead is currently without a full-time chief. The town of Drew advertised for a new chief earlier this year when the board of aldermen declined to bring back former Chief Terry Tyler after he was cleared of charges in an indictment related to a shooting in a restaurant in Southaven in 2022.
The town of Belzoni is also reportedly without a police chief.
