The 2019 high school football season is fast approaching, which means it is jamboree time for all four of Sunflower County’s gridiron squads.
As a result, this Friday and Saturday will offer each team’s coaching staff a live look at their team competing against someone other than a teammate.
For Gentry High School, which opens their new season at home Saturday, August 24 against Greenville High School, Head Coach Mario Young’s Rams will travel to Hollandale Simmons High School this Friday for a pair of scrimmages.
It will be a 6:20 p.m. clash with Leflore County High which will open the Rams’ efforts this day. The Rams will quickly return to the field at 6:40 p.m. to do battle with South Delta High of Rolling Fork.
This Friday will also be a play date for the Indianola Academy Colonels.
Traveling to Lee Academy in Clarksdale, the Colonels will participate in a pair of running clock scrimmages.
Initially taking the field at 4 p.m. against Marshall Academy of Holly Springs, Head Coach Tommy Nester’s squad will return to action at 6:40 p.m. to do battle with North Delta School of Batesville.
The Colonels open their new season next Friday, August 23 with a home-field clash against Bayou Academy of Cleveland.
In the northern end of the county, the Thomas E. Edwards Sr. High Tigers of Ruleville will be traveling to Oxford this Saturday.
Playing at Oxford Middle School, Head Coach Demaris Mitchell’s staff will watch their team take the field at 3 p.m. for a pair of quarters versus Ripley High School.
The Tigers’ 2019 season commences next Friday, August 23 with a trip to Tunica Rosa Fort High School.
Meanwhile, a live-action sneak peek of his new North Sunflower Academy has already been had by Head Coach Jimmy McGregor.
His Rebels took to the field last Friday at Deer Creek School and suffered losses to the host team and Manchester Academy of Yazoo City.
The NSA squad opens its season at home next Friday, August 23 when Delta Streets Academy of Greenwood comes to town.
