One more basketball game to play and then a near two week break will be had by the Gentry High School Lady Rams.
Owning a 9-5, 2-0 record heading into this Friday’s non-regional 6 p.m. home game versus Ruleville Central High, this past week’s play saw the Lady Rams pick up two Region 3-4A victories in their three games played.
While this Friday’s home game will conclude all action in the 2018 calendar year, it also begins a five game run of home dates which help open the 2019 portion of the Lady Rams’ schedule.
Most recently Tuesday night, the Lady Rams traveled to Yazoo City High School and overwhelmed the Indians by a 66-24 margin.
Defense helped the Gentry squad earn this game as they limited the Indians to single digit scoring in all but the final period of play. In that fourth quarter, the Yazoo City squad was held scoreless.
The game was essentially over by halftime as the Lady Rams owned a 45-16 lead.
Mercedes Hayes’ third consecutive double double performance of the week led the Gentry attack as the senior hit for 17 points while bringing down 11 rebounds.
Also reaching double figures in scoring was Shacori Dawson, who placed 11 points on the scoreboard.
Tuesday night’s decision was preceded by another regional victory earned last Friday when the Gentry squad handed visiting Tunica Rosa Fort High a 48-20 loss.
Exploding to a 17-5 first period lead in this game, the Lady Rams moved on to a 27-9 halftime lead en route to earning their 28 point victory.
While Hayes’ team leading double double included 14 points and 11 rebounds, Belize Reed finished the game having contributed 13 points to the Rams’ cause.
In their only loss of the week last Saturday, a trip to Aberdeen High School resulted in a 47-28 defeat at the hands of 5A member Forest Hill High School of Jackson.
Although Gentry opened the game with an 8-6 lead after one quarter of play, the Lady Patriots would outscore the Lady Rams in each of the subsequent periods to earn their non-regional victory.
Another double double, 10 points and 10 rebounds, was turned in by Hayes while Reed’s 12 points scored led the Gentry High scoring efforts.
