Lady Trojan Softball season opened this past Monday on the road. The trek to Camden, Arkansas saw MDCC lose the double-header to SAU Tech, 7–5 and 4–0. First-year Head Coach Olivia Burns notes the young team has plenty of work ahead.
“We have a lot of work to do. The girls did really well there are just some small things to work on to get better,” Coach Burns said.
Her task is taking a young team and getting them initiated into the JUCO level of play, something she is quite familiar with.
“It’s hard for them right now getting used to how fast the game is on the Junior College level compared to high school,” She said.
Her philosophy is to put the ball in play with a lot of line drives and base hits. She doesn’t have a “small ball” type roster.
The Lady Trojans travel to South Arkansas Community College for a double-header on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., then travel to Hot Sprints, Arkansas on Sunday to take National Park College at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Ladies then host their home opener on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Coach Burns is relying on her young talent to blend with sophomores to get the job done this season.
“We have sophomore Taryn Clark who is hitting really well and she pitched a good game. Then we have freshman Maddie Melton that is a pitcher and had a good game at the plate. Lizzie Carpenter, our third baseman, she hit well. Sophomore Anna Maire Sternisha who made some good plays and hit the ball solid.”
The former utility infielder, pitcher and catcher (last six games at Delta State) is ready for the 2023 season challenge and the league.
“I played in this league (Itawamba Community College) and I know how it goes,” she said.
