It was a pair of back-to-back pitching performances rarely seen at any level of baseball play.
Only two days after senior Josh Hill struck out 19 batters to record a 3-0 shutout win over North Delta School, the batters from Batesville then fell prey to the no-hit pitching performance by fellow IA senior Will Davis.
Picking up his 8-0 win, Davis just missed a perfect game performance as the Green Wave were only able to reach first base by way of a fourth inning fielding error and a seventh inning walk.
That final inning baserunner was eventually cleared from the base paths with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Hill, who will be a member of the Mississippi State University baseball team next spring, only allowed four singles and gave up only one walk in his 6 2/3 innings of work; those hits also accounted for the only balls hit out of the infield by North Delta School hitters in this contest.
Meanwhile, Davis only needed 68 pitches and one hour and 42 minutes to hurl his complete game, no-hit shutout.
The East Central Community College signee recorded six strikeouts and one walk while receiving solid defense behind him; particularly from Northwest Mississippi Community College signee Wesley Lester.
The third baseman’s six successful fielding chances included a second inning diving catch of a ground ball to his left, which along with a quick throw to first base, helped preserve the in progress no-hitter.
