While an eight game win streak has come to an end, the pursuit of a high seed in the playoffs continues for the Gentry High Rams baseball team.
Hoping to rebound from Tuesday’s 11-1 road decision loss to Yazoo City High, the 8-1, 3-1 Rams have ample opportunity to return to the win column the balance of this week; beginning with avenging their recent loss with today’s visit by the Yazoo City squad. First pitch of this critical Region 3-4A game is set to be thrown at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, this Friday the Rams will travel to regional foe Greenwood High to take on the Bulldogs in another 4 p.m. contest..
With the 2018 4A state playoffs beginning April 19, the top four teams from each region will be a participants.
With the Rams on track toward a playoff berth, Region 2-4A will provide the competition; a region which includes Amory, Caledonia, Itawamba AHS (Fulton), Mooreville, Pontotoc, and Shannon High Schools.
In their recent loss to Yazoo City, it was a bad day at the ballpark for the Rams as errors and walks plagued the Gentry squad which only generated one hit in the game.
While Kameron Spencer’s first inning triple accounted for the Rams’ only hit, the Indians used six hits, eight walks, and 10 Gentry High errors to help generate their double digit run total.
However, the Rams did claim a Region 3-4A victory this past week when they hosted and defeated Tunica Rosa Fort High by a 12-11 margin.
In their one run victory over Tunica Rosa Fort last Wednesday, the Rams held off a ferocious sixth inning rally by the Lions to claim the victory.
Going into the top of the sixth inning owning a 12-4 lead, the Rams weathered a Lions squad which would push seven runs across the plate to narrow their deficit to one.
However, Spencer would come to the mound in the top of the seventh to record the save. The senior held the Tunica batters hitless and scoreless while striking out two of the four batters he faced.
At the plate, the Rams hammered out five hits in this game with Kelvun Moton leading the attack with a double and a single.
