The “second season” is now about to begin for both Gentry High School basketball teams.
Accordingly, beginning with next Wednesday night’s opening game of the Region 3-4A Tournament, the 21-5 Rams and the 14-11 Lady Rams will begin their quest for a state championship.
A successful journey to the state crown game could take them to, among other places, Mississippi Valley State University, the Coliseum in Jackson, and ultimately to the University of Mississippi.
However, the first step of the postseason will begin at 6 p.m. next Wednesday night at Greenwood High School. Once there, the Gentry squads, both seeded No. 3 in their region, will take the court against the No. 2 seeded Greenwood High squads.
Prior to that tournament play, there is still one final regular season game for the Gentry squads to complete.
For this Friday will bring Shaw High School to the Gentry High gym where Senior Night will be celebrated by the Gentry High squads.
The Lady Rams’ game will tip-off at 6 p.m. while the Rams will follow immediately thereafter.
In this past week’s play, the Lady Rams split their two home-court games played.
While last Saturday earned a 43-14 victory over Ray Brooks High of Benoit, last Friday night saw the Lady Rams suffer a 51-40 regional loss to Clarksdale High.
Against Ray Brooks High, the Lady Rams scoring efforts in this lopsided win were led by the nine point efforts of both Zoe Howard and Jada Delaney.
One night earlier, the Clarksdale squad would build on their 28-22 first half lead during the second half to claim the game.
Leading the scoring for Gentry High this game were Shacori Dawson (11 points) and Taniyah Williams (10 points).
Meanwhile, the Rams claimed both of their games played with a 78-43 thrashing of Ray Brooks High and a 58-43 defeat of the Clarksdale High Wildcats.
Leading the scoring charge against Ray Brooks High was Christopher Minton with 18 points while Jesse Hull dropped a dozen points through the basket.
In their game with Clarksdale, the Rams were led by Deandre Brisco as the sophomore posted 20 points on the scoreboard.
Also reaching double digit scoring status were Makelvi Hutchins with 13 points while Hull recorded his second consecutive 12 point game of the week.
