The playoff season has now arrived for the 24-3 Gentry High Rams who have only one final game to play prior to next week’s Region 3-4A Tournament hosted by Yazoo City High School.
Entering postseason play as their region’s No. 1 seed and ranked No. 8 among all schools in the state, the Rams’ initial opponent and date is to be announced for this tournament which opens next Monday.
However, by virtue of their No. 1 seeding in the regional tournament the Rams have automatically earned a berth into the State 4A playoffs. That tournament’s opening play-in game is scheduled to take place on February 20 and the first round action will be versus a Region 2-4A opponent.
Teams hailing from Region 2 include Amory, Caledonia, Itawamba AHS of Fulton, Mooreville, Pontotoc, and Shannon High Schools.
Each bracket’s higher seed emerging out of this week’s regional tournament will serve as the home team in that initial state playoff play-in game.
Although postseason play is imminent, the Rams still have that one game remaining to play before closing out their 2017-18 regular season schedule. For this Friday at 7 p.m. Shaw High School visits the Gentry High gym for a non-regional match-up.
Other play this past week included last Friday’s 103-65 regional victory over visiting Yazoo High School while this past Tuesday night the Greenwood High Bulldogs fell to the home-standing Rams by a 91-55 margin.
In their victory over Greenwood, the Rams bolted to a 50-26 halftime lead and then continued to expand their lead in the second half of play.
Leading the scoring for the Rams was Darrius Clark with 19 points while Cartisco Brown was close behind with his 18 point night of play.
Also reaching double figure scoring was Ernest Minton, who posted 16 points on the Rams’ side of the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, in their 38 point win over the Indians of Yazoo City High, the Rams broke the century mark in scoring behind the double digit scoring of five players.
With Robert Bell’s double double, which included 20 points and 12 rebounds, leading the way, Joshujuan Townsend bucketed another 16 points over the Indians’ defense.
Also adding a dozen points apiece to the Gentry High scoring effort were Reginald Bolden and
Shamarvious Hodges.
An additional strong performance was had from Clark as he reached double figures in the rebounding category by bringing down 11 errant shots.
